Answers

  1. Is there a minimum time contract/commitment?
No. You pay yearly, six months, three months, or monthly according to the plan type but can cancel at any time. (see the policy page regarding this).
  2. Why do you restrict site content?
This is a limited access server. There are kinds of business we don't accept. (see the policy page). Adult sites, spammers, etc. are not welcome and should go elsewhere.
  3. How soon will my account be ready?
We will set up your account within three days of receipt of information and payment, often in much less time. Your site can be uploaded to our servers immediately after receiving the welcome e-mail, which will contain information on accessing your account via FTP, plus the initial password for the username chosen during signup. We recommend clients change this password and upload their site as soon as possible after setup is complete. You also have to go to your domain registrar and change the nameservers to ours so that you can be found. It may take up to three days for some parts of the Internet to respond to these changes and direct your site traffic correctly. However, if you buy your domain from our sister company, WebNameSource.com, changes made to the nameservers "take" immediately.
  4. Do you offer ISP services?
No, nor do we recommend an ISP. Check locally, as costs and quality vary from city to city.
  5. Can I update my site 24 hours a day?
Hey, you can stay up all night working on it. No problem.
  6. Can you register/transfer a domain name for me?
Yes, but you had best handle that at our sister company WebNameSource. Click on the button in the left column, and you can register a .com. .net, .org, .info, .cc, or .ca domain name for very attractive price. If you really want us to handle it manually, we will, but it will cost more.
  7. Can you host domains other than .com, .org, and .net?
It does not matter what your top level domain is, we can host it. If it uses an extension other than the ones our sister company registers, you have to buy and manage it elsewhere, but we can host it. We especially encourage .ca sites.
  8. Do you offer a money back guarantee?
Yes. If for any reason during the first 30 days, you are not completely satisfied, we will cancel your account and refund all your money . After that, if you cancel during the year, we will refund you on a pro-rated monthly basis by cheque.
  9. Why do you ask payment for a whole year/six months/three months on some accounts?
It's cheaper and easier for us, and you therefore pay less. Monthly payment costs us both more.
  10. Some hosts offer "unlimited bandwidth". Why don't you?
There is no such thing as "unlimited bandwidth". Someone has to pay for the traffic. If your network traffic exceeds a certain fixed amount, or a percentage of their server's capability, they will charge you or ask you to leave their service. At WebNameHost, if you need more bandwidth, you can upgrade, but most accounts don't need much. Our bandwidth is high quality.
  11. Do you host Adult sites, warez sites or sites containing illegal material?
NO. (see the policy page regarding this).
  12. What about backups?
Our data is backed up, but we cannot guarantee we can restore a site. You have to take responsibility for maintaining the original of your site on your own computer and backing it up yourself, like everybody else does. We are not your mother. See the documentation page on backups for more details.
  13. Do I get a control panel?
Every account has a control panel called CPanel. You can use it to set up users, manage files, create mail accounts, create forwards, set up mailing lists, etc. Resellers get another control panel called WHM (Web Host Manager.)
  14. Will you let me see a demo of the account control panel?
Certainly. Just click on the demo box at left and you will be shown various themes.
  15. Can I upgrade my plan or features later?
No problem. Just send us eMail telling us what you want to do and we'll quote you a cost. Once you've paid at our secure payment centre, we'll take care of the upgrade.
  16. I changed my control panel password and now I can't get in.
Passwords are case sensitive and are limited to 8 characters. If you entered a password longer than 8 characters please try entering the first 8 characters when logging into your control panel. If you still cannot access your account go to our help desk, put in a help ticket, and we will reset your password for you. If it is one of your users who cannot access their mail, you can change their password yourself from your control panel.
  17. How do I get my e-mail?
Suppose your domain is called yourdomain.com. Set up your eMail client with this same domain as the POP server and SMTP server, and your username and password for the account. This will allow you to receive mail. If you want to send mail using this server, you may have to do so within a few minutes of having connected to receive (check) mail, but if your mail allows SMTP authentication, this should be taken care of automatically. If this is not convenient, use your ISP to send mail and receive it from this POP account. (We do things this way for security reasons, to prevent others from taking over your mail account and using it to send spam.)
  18. I want to get started right away, but my domain name hasn't gone live in the registry.
The documentation on this site contains information on this. You FTP to our site's special IP address that we gave you and sign on with your username and password. Be sure the FTP client is pointing into the folder www (or public_html, which is the same folder) before placing files in it. Be sure to replace or remove any file called index.html (or similar name). Your own welcome page should have this name. After your domain name information is fully propagated through the system, you can upload to ftp.yourdomain.com. Don't forget the ftp in front.
  19. Do I have full access to a CGI-BIN?
Yes. We supply the means to install and access some scripts, such as counters, a guestbook, clock, bulletin boards, etc. However, you can incorporate other legal scripts into your site as you wish, so long as you don't violate our use policies.
  20. What is the path to Perl?
    It is #!/usr/bin/perl
  21. Do you let me use Telnet?
No. It is not necessary and it is a security risk for all my customers. You wouldn't want them using it on the server containing your files.
  22. Can I set file permissions for CGIs without using Telnet?
Yes. Most FTP programs will allow this. Alternatelty, you use the file manager from the control panel to navigate to the file whose permissions you want to change and you can set read and write permissions as you please. 755 is typical for scripts you want to execute. Click all boxes in the first column, and the first and last boxes in the other two columns to achieve this.
  23. Why don't you guarantee 99.9% uptime?
If all that mattered was hardware reliability, services outages would be very rare indeed and such a figure would make sense. But in the present net atmosphere, no one can deliver on such a guarantee. Malicious people attack web data centres all the time. They are very unlikely to get at our files but they can effectively prevent a server from working until our technicians stop the attack. Every data centre has down time for this reason, though it seldom amounts to more than a few hours in a month.
  24. What are your nameservers?
The welcome message has these, and so does the documentation page. But for reference purposes, they are:
    ns3.webnamehost.net 162.42.131.36
    ns4.webnamehost.net 162.42.131.37
